MMC as it is known has played an integral role in the economy and development of Nelspruit. Being the biggest industrial factory in nelspruit since 1974 MMC is a well known company locally and internationally as they supply manganese to companies like Tesla. A few years age we photographed one of Louis Nel’s ( CEO of MMC ) motorbikes that he had custom built himself. He was really happy with the photos that Sven took of the bike to such an extent that he approached us to start doing photography work for MMC as a company. We were asssigned to showcase the work process and systems that MMC had in place to manufacture their products.
This was an interesting task because how do you showcase and capture such an unique and complicated process. Luckily though the whole MMC plant lends itself to a lot of creativity and it gave us the chance to really experiment with different angles and shots. The purple colours of the Manganese sheets cooling down , the orange hard hats of workers the yellow colours of the steel, the steam rising from manganes sheets all adds to the the creativity needed for a compelling photograph. Over time we’ve photographed their corporate portraits, website content, products and general everyday work.
Photographing for companies like MMC is always exciting. You see how they change over time and it forces one to adapt the way you approach the work you do for them,. We have to constantly think creative and different to keep the content up to date and inspire viewer interest. MMC is constantly at the forefront of improving work processess and thus we do photography work for them on a regular basis that they use for marketing content and website updates. Working in industrial environments such as at MMC helps us to improve the way we photograph and approach our subjects. Oftent times we have to photograph a lot of different people in different environments , people who are not all comfortable in front of the camera.
We’ve learnt that the best way of making a subject feel at ease especially in an industrial environment such as MMC is to be approachable and be interested in the work that specific person does and the role they play in the bigger supply chain. Getting to photograph people that truly enjoy their work is a real pleasure and nothing is more satisfying than getting “THAT” shot out of our subjects.
MMC has become one of our key clients and it is always a pleasure working with them and helping them to stay digitally active and visible to clients and stakeholders.
